Project Description

MOROCCO, EUROPE’S “ARABIAN NIGHTS” THEME PARK

Morocco, a colorful country rich in culture and history, swamped with European tourists seeking the Orientalists’ dreamland of Aladdin and his magic lamp. I couldn’t escape the feeling that parts of Morocco seemed as a sort of Europe’s “Arabian Nights” theme park that is just two or three hours away by air from the cold and boring European capitals. Like take for instance that dreadful and world famous square of Jemaa el-Fnaa in Marrakech with the monkeys chained up so tourist can have photos with them, the fangless snakes, and the rude aggressive locals preying on naive visitors. Luckily, however, Morocco has a lot more to offer away from the filthy and busy tourist areas, its ancient kasbahs are breathtaking, the walled riads are a gem of architecture, the Roman ruins are impressive, the magnificent Sahara and its oases will leave you in awe, the tasty food and its famous mint tea will have you wanting for more, most locals will want to speak to you and are generally pleasant with tourists (although not very photo friendly), and hey while you are at it – you can use the opportunity to ski in Morocco’s mountainous regions (yes, you read that well, you can ski in Morocco’s Atlas mountains). These are only a few attractions that make Morocco an interesting destination well worth a (lengthy) visit.
