Project Description
Hurricane Sandy, US
Hurricane Sandy or “Superstorm Sandy” was the deadliest and most destructive hurricane of the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season, and the second-costliest hurricane in United States history.
New York was severely affected by Sandy, particularly New York City, its suburbs, and Long Island. Sandy’s impacts included the flooding of the New York City Subway system, of many suburban communities, and of all road tunnels entering Manhattan except the Lincoln Tunnel. Large parts of the city and surrounding areas lost electricity for several days. The three major airports serving New York City, JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark, were closed. At least 53 people died in New York as a result of the storm. Thousands of homes and an estimated 250,000 vehicles were destroyed during the storm, and the economic losses in New York City were estimated to be roughly $19 billion. Sandy toppled more than 8,000 street trees and destroyed thousands more in parks and woodlands.
